Analysis reveals ultrastructural alterations in substantia nigra following 6-OHDA and lactacystin exposure, indicating mitochondrial stress.
This study investigated the ultrastructural alterations in the tissue and mitochondria of the substantia nigra (SN) following two experimental models of Parkinson’s disease (PD): unilateral stereotaxic administration of the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and the proteasome inhibitor lactacystin. Both models were used to induce dopaminergic neurodegeneration, allowing comparison of mitochondrial and tissue-level damage within the SN. The analysis highlights distinct ultrastructural changes associated with oxidative stress and proteostasis disruption in these PD models.
