Abstract

This work clarifies the radical potential of integrating new materialist perspectives with Marxist political economy. After reviewing current debates, I delineate three focuses of a more-than-human political ecology: (I) reciprocity and mutual constitution; (II) re-territorialization; and (III) subversiveness. I highlight how attention to non-human agency can sharpen—rather than blunt—the radical edge of political ecology analyses, contributing to destabilizing dominant inequitable practices and fostering the emergence of alternative futures. In elucidating these aspects, this article encourages further engagement with the lenses of more-than-human political ecology. The rich literature collated here highlights how more-than-human political ecology stands strongly as an existing and expanding approach within critical scholarship.
