Analysis using actual conditions driving simulation improves accuracy in turbo-expander performance predictions, highlighting grid choice implications.
In this paper, actual conditions driving simulation (ACDS) is adopted for the flow field analysis and performance prediction of a turbo-expander. Compared to moving reference frames simulation (single reference frame simulation, SRFS and multiple reference frames simulation, MRFS) suffering from over-constrained boundary conditions, the settings of ACDS are consistent with actual working conditions. Moreover, the influences of a tetrahedral grid, a polyhedral grid, a hexahedral grid, and a poly-hexcore hybrid grid (PHHG) on the calculation results of SRFS, MRFS, and ACDS are analyzed for selecting the optimal grid of the simulations, considering calculation efficiency and accuracy. The results indicate that PHHG is the best grid for SRFS and MRFS, while HG is the optimal choice for ACDS. The flow fields calculated by SRFS and MRFS exist unreasonable sudden change, while those of ACDS vary smoothly. The average errors of isentropic efficiency obtained from SRFS, MRFS, and ACDS are 11.84%, 4.18%, and 2.26%, respectively. Furthermore, the average error of rotation speed calculated by ACDS is 6.52%, and the dynamic variation process of rotation speed is obtained.
