This study demonstrates enhanced ignition delay time in pyrotechnic igniters with divalent doped ferrites, suggesting effective additive optimization.
This study investigates the influence of divalent metal‐substituted nano‐ferrites (NFs) as additives on the ignition delay time (IDT) of shellac–potassium nitrate (KNO 3 )‐based pyrotechnic igniters. Magnesium, cobalt, nickel, and zinc ferrites were introduced into the energetic matrix at 1–6 wt% by replacing either the fuel component or the oxidizer. All formulations significantly reduced the IDT compared to the base composition. The most significant reduction in IDT (∼67%) was achieved when 6 wt% CoFe 2 O 4 was added to the composition via the fuel replacement route. MgFe 2 O 4 performed best when incorporated via the oxidizer replacement route, reducing the IDT by ∼65% when added at 4 wt% in the composition. This study identifies optimal additive loadings and correlates the structural characteristics of nano ferrites with their performance as ignition catalysts in shellac and KNO 3 systems. Changes in bulk density due to ferrite incorporation, along with its correlation with ignition delay time, were established.
