Evaluation shows conventional VIBE sequences accurately assess cartilage endplate damage in low back pain patients, indicating better visualization of IVD degeneration.
Motivation: The progression of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is closely linked to cartilage endplate (CEP) damage. Goal(s): This study evaluates the value of MRI VIBE sequences in visualizing and assessing CEP damage in low back pain (LBP) patients and explores its correlation with IVD degeneration. Approach: 54 LBP patients underwent MRI using various sequences to assess IVD and CEP damage. Image quality, inter-observer consistency, and correlations with degeneration were analyzed. Results: Conventional VIBE sequences showed superior image quality and consistency compared to VIBE e-dixon, with significant correlations to Pfirrmann grading, especially in patients ≤50 years. Impact: This study highlights the potential of conventional VIBE sequences for non-invasive, accurate assessment of CEP damage, which may improve early diagnosis and monitoring of IVD degeneration. It opens avenues for further investigation into VIBE's clinical application in personalized treatment strategies for LBP patients.
