Analysis reveals changes in choroid plexus volume in healthy individuals from fetal to elderly age, highlighting developmental trends.
Motivation: The developmental trajectory and aging process of the choroid plexus (ChP) are rarely studied in humans. Goal(s): To establish comprehensive reference values of ChP development from the fetus to the elderly. Approach: 5,314 healthy subjects from 21 weeks gestational age to 100 years old were retrospectively selected. The ChP region was extracted based on in-house ChP segmentation models and the ChP volume features were calculated. Results: The absolute volume of the ChP increases across the entire lifespan. In contrast, the ratio between the ChP and the brain volume is notably higher in both fetal and elderly subjects. Impact: This study provided a baseline of ChP in lifespan, which may promote the understanding of its function throughout brain development stages and provide reference values for aging-related research.
