This study demonstrates the quantification of optic neuropathy and CSF flow in glaucoma patients, suggesting enhanced early diagnosis.
Motivation: Clinically available methods fail to identify pathophysiological microstructure changes occurring along the optic nerve in glaucoma. Goal(s): We aim to quantify optic neuropathy and CSF flow along the optic nerve with diffusion MRI to advance understanding of the disease mechanism and support early diagnosis. Approach: Our study proposes a dedicated microstructure model and a ROI sampling scheme to evaluate glaucomatous changes in the human optic nerve. Results: The proposed model correctly identifies optic nerve degeneration and impeded CSF flow in glaucoma patients based on clinically feasible diffusion MRI. Impact: Vision loss due to glaucoma is preventable if diagnosed early. Our approach has the potential to identify glaucomatous changes in patients undergoing diffusion MRI exam and thus support timely and targeted treatment.
