Analysis shows correlations between bone shape asymmetries and cartilage changes in knee osteoarthritis patients, indicating health interrelationships.
Motivation: It is essential to understand the impact of asymmetries in the hip joint on the structural changes in the knee weight-bearing joint. Goal(s): Investigate the association between hip and knee joints bone shape asymmetries(BSA) and the resulting changes in the contralateral knee cartilage. Approach: Hip and knee joint BSA analysis was conducted, the relationship between hip and knee BSA and changes in contralateral knee cartilage characteristics were observed. Results: The mean bone shape difference(MBSD) in the proximal femoral region was positively correlated with MBSD values in the distal femur and negatively correlated with contralateral trochlear mean cartilage thickness values. Impact: The inter joint parameter relations helpful to enhance our understanding of the interrelated nature of joint health, particularly how bone shape asymmetries in the hip and knee may contribute to the progression of Knee OA.
