Observational analysis linked increased brain iron deposition to cognitive deficits in dementia with lewy bodies patients, suggesting QSM as a potential biomarker.
Motivation: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) presents unique challenges due to overlapping symptoms. Investigating brain iron deposition with quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) may provide insights into DLB's pathogenic mechanisms. Goal(s): This study aims to investigate structural and magnetic susceptibility (c) changes in the brains of DLB patients, correlating with cognitive performance. Approach: A cohort of DLB patients underwent advanced MRI techniques, including QSM, to evaluate iron deposition patterns and structural integrity compared to healthy controls. Results: The study found increased c in various brain regions of DLB patients, correlating with cognitive deficits, highlighting QSM's potential as a biomarker for DLB diagnosis and monitoring. Impact: This study demonstrates the potential of quantitative QSM as a biomarker for DLB monitoring disease progression. By linking brain iron deposition to cognitive deficits, it paves the way for further research into the underlying mechanisms of DLB.
