Custom electromagnetic Halbach cylinder generates a homogeneous magnetic field in cells, suggesting new insights into cellular metabolism.
Motivation: Magnetic field effects on cellular metabolism have been documented but with little to no exploration of that space with respect to field direction, strength, and oscillation frequency. Goal(s): Our goal is to design a custom electromagnet that integrates with a fluorescence microscope to study magnetic field effects on cellular metabolism. Approach: We developed and characterized a rotating electromagnetic Halbach cylinder along with custom amplifier circuitry and software. Results: Generation of a homogeneous field (2% variation) in an arbitrary direction over a 12 mm x 12 mm region in the x-y plane (perpendicular to the fluorescent light path) is demonstrated. Impact: The electromagnetic Halbach array produces a controllable and homogeneous field orthogonal to a fluorescent light source, allowing for further investigation of magnetic field effects on cellular metabolism.
