Observational analysis revealed significant functional connectivity changes in the sensorimotor network, indicating early cortical reorganization post-FES cycling in chronic SCI patients.
Motivation: We aimed to fill the knowledge gap regarding the cortical reorganization within Sensorimotor after FES cycling intervention. Goal(s): We sought to investigate early connectivity changes in individuals with chronic SCI, after intervention. Approach: We implemented graph theory technique to analyze resting state fMRI data, this approach quantifies brain regions to evaluate functional connectivity changes between SCI intervention period. Results: Significant connectivity changes were observed within the sensorimotor network at post-FES stage. Increased RC and IC values across SMN-1 and SMN-2 regions suggest enhanced intra-network and inter-network connectivity respectively within the segregated sensorimotor network while motor scores remain unmeasurable. Impact: Our findings reveal FES-induced reorganization within the sensorimotor network of the SCI group at the post-FES stage. This could guide clinicians, researchers, and rehabilitation specialists in using rs-fMRI to observe early cortical changes, even when measurable motor improvements are absent.
