Experimental analysis reveals fiber Bragg gratings effectively monitor fatigue in thermoplastic CARALLs, suggesting future applications for structural health monitoring.
The fatigue monitoring performance of embedded fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors in thermoplastic carbon fiber reinforced aluminum laminates (CARALLs) was experimentally investigated. During the hot press forming of 2024-T3 and CF/PEEK composites, FBGs were embedded at the metal–composite interface to enable real-time internal strain monitoring and subsequent fatigue service testing. The fatigue tests demonstrated that the FBGs operated reliably within the tensile strength range of the CARALLs, and their signals effectively captured the progressive stiffness degradation of the laminates, indicating strong potential for long-term structural health monitoring
