This special issue explores the impact of anti-equity legislation on JEDIA in higher education, highlighting strategies for educators.
The Battling the Bans Special Issue is a response to rising legislative and ideological attacks on justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (JEDIA) in higher education. Instructors and students in leisure studies and recreation education face increasing surveillance, self-censorship, and the erosion of academic freedom as JEDIA-related content is restricted or banned. These developments undermine the quality of education, campus climate, and professional preparation of students. Drawing on the current sociopolitical context, this article outlines institutional challenges and offers practical strategies for resistance. It also introduces the five papers featured in the issue, each offering pedagogical responses to the current political climate. Together, they affirm that educators have a critical role to play in defending academic freedom and preparing students to thrive in diverse, democratic societies.
