Analysis reveals how afro-brazilian terreiros provide identity development and social support for LGBTQ+ youth, highlighting their role in fostering inclusion.
This study analyzes how LGBTQ+ youth find support in Afro-Brazilian terreiros, exploring their experiences, particularly regarding belonging, social support, and identity development. The research is based on dialogues with young people who attend these faith spaces, as well as observations of the welcoming practices carried out in these locations. The study shows how terreiros promote well-being, empowerment, and resistance in the face of social discrimination. Furthermore, it aims to contribute to the understanding of how religious practices can function as instruments of social inclusion and intersectional support for LGBTQ+ youth, providing valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, programs aimed at LGBTQ+ youth, and society at large.
