Demonstration of a carbonyl sulfide quantum cascade laser that efficiently emits terahertz waves, suggesting new communication possibilities.
The quantum cascade laser pumped molecular laser (QPML) is a versatile terahertz (THz) source that has the potential to fill the THz gap, with demonstrated operations from 200 GHz up to more than 5 THz. Here we demonstrate the operation of an OCS QPML that emits lines every 12.2 GHz from 200 GHz up to 1 THz. Lasing threshold measurements and precise measurement of the infrared absorption efficiency validate previously derived models. The fine tunability enabled by this new gain medium opens the way for communication applications, by a simple modulation of the pump power.
