Demonstrates a QRNG system using vacuum noise in a CubeSat mission, suggesting secure random number extraction.
We demonstrate a quantum random number generation (QRNG) scheme based on vacuum noise, from the continuous variable quantum payload developed for SPOQC - a CubeSat mission by the Quantum Communication Hub, UK, to be launched by early 2026. It involves homodyne measurement of vacuum noise and hashing the output to get smaller, secure quantum random numbers. We have successfully tested and extracted 2.998 bit per 12-bit ADC output (≈ 19.5Kb) of quantum random numbers from ≈ 1Mb amount of raw data. We also provide the results of quantification of the conditional min-entropy, taking into account the quantum side information leakage to the eavesdropper Eve. Once launched successfully, this QRNG will be the first of its kind in space.
