Research defines structural diagnostics as a BIM use case, highlighting its role in maintenance planning and data management.
Maintaining existing structures is one of the key challenges of our time. Structural diagnostic measurements provide reliable information about the condition, damage and material properties of buildings. Digitalization of these processes within the framework of Building Information Modelling (BIM) improves collaboration between clients, structural engineers and diagnosticians. The openSIM research project seeks to define building diagnostics as a BIM use case. A central element is the implementation of a Common Data Environment (CDE), serving as a single source of truth for all data throughout the building’s lifecycle. This enables transparent communication, sustainable data storage and informed decision-making. This paper outlines the theoretical foundations and practical examples for applying the BIM methodology to the preparation, execution and evaluation of structural diagnostic investigations. The objective is to support effective maintenance planning and promote long-term sustainability in infrastructure management.
