Application of advanced imaging techniques improves wave velocity and density mapping in concrete, suggesting better assessments for non-destructive testing.
Ultrasonic measurements are widely used in non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) to assess the safety of critical infrastructure. However, concrete poses a significant challenge to conventional imaging methods in NDT. To improve imaging of complex concrete interiors, advanced geophysical imaging techniques have been combined with conventional NDT methods. Here, we present the results from tests on synthetic datasets. Full waveform inversion (FWI), which is based on a finite-difference modelling algorithm, has been employed as an advanced imaging method. Wave velocity and density distributions inside the specimen are reconstructed from recorded wavefields, providing detailed information for further analysis.
