This mixed-method study uncovers cultural disparities impacting friendship development in Mainland and Hong Kong Chinese students, highlighting key relationship dynamics.
This study examines the determinants that shape intercultural friendships across various developmental phases to bridge significant research gaps in the literature. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research included a survey involving 159 participants and a series of semi-structured interviews with 24 individuals. The findings revealed the challenges posed by cultural disparities and the scarcity of shared conversational themes across all stages. Concerns about language proficiency diminished as friendships evolved, while the role of spatial proximity became increasingly salient. The study uncovers the intricate dynamics within Mainland-Hong Kong friendships and expands the discussion on Knapp's Relational Stage Model.
