Research reveals turbulence and wind velocity profiles in atmospheric layers, indicating advancements in atmospheric monitoring techniques.
The Starre Atmospheric Monitor (SAM) has been measuring the turbulence at the Air Force Research Laboratory's Starre Optical Range (SOR) since 2008. This paper looks at using SAM's Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor data with the technique of differential scintillations to generate profiles of the index of refraction structure function, C²n (z) and the wind velocity above SOR. The adaptation of the method to the geometry of the SAM system is discussed and the results of applying the algorithm to some of the SAM data are presented.
