Organising an LGBTQ+ dementia awareness day revealed key insights and barriers in mental health services, indicating the need for systemic change.
This article describes organising a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or questioning) and more (LGBTQ+) dementia awareness day for NHS staff members in an older adult mental health in-patient and outpatient service. The event was the first of its kind, which aimed to raise awareness about the intersectionalities of LGBTQ+ and dementia. In this article, minority stress theory, queer theory and related research were covered. Staff reflections of the awareness day were collected from interviews and summarised into themes. Future changes concerning organisational barriers were also discussed.
