Analysis shows that instant messaging improves emotional closeness and family relationships for isolated older adults.
This study examined the role of instant messaging (IM) in enhancing the well-being of older adults living alone in Taiwan. As social isolation becomes more prevalent in this population, digital communication has become crucial to maintaining social connections. This research explored how IM influences older adults' family relationships and emotional well-being. Using data from the 2021 Taiwan Social Change Survey, the study analyzed responses from 68 older adults (aged 60 or older) who lived alone and used IM to communicate with family members. Findings reveal that frequent IM use strengthened communication, fostered emotional closeness, and enhanced problem-solving in family relationships. The study demonstrates that IM use positively affected happiness by improving familial connections, reinforcing the significance of digital engagement in reducing loneliness. These results emphasize the need for digital literacy programs and inclusive technology design to enhance IM accessibility, particularly for older adults living alone, to stay connected with family.
