Experimental assessment reveals the importance of background temperature in gas imaging systems, indicating improved NETD for CO2 detection.
This research presents the experimental assessment of the NETD parameter for an infrared system developed for gas detection using the single-pixel imaging technique. Gas imaging systems often uses the narrow-band filtering for contrast enhancement which significantly reduces the incoming radiation energy and deteriorates the signal-to-noise characteristic. The developed system was tested for CO2 detection in MWIR wavelength band. The presented results confirmed experimentally the higher value of the NETD parameter for the system equipped with the interference filter. The NETD parameter was evaluated using a simple testing stand with the black body for selecting the proper background temperature. The obtained results confirm the importance of the background temperature in the detection process, the value of which is important in determining the sensitivity and noise level of the system, the attenuation of the radiation of optical elements and the spectral characteristics of the detected gas.
