Synthesis of ruthenium and chromium chelates shows similar nonlinear optical characteristics, suggesting potential applications.
The newly synthesized complexes of 3,4‐Bis‐[(5‐chloro‐2‐hydroxy‐benzylidene)‐amino]‐phenyl‐phenyl‐methanone derivative with Cr and Ru metal were studied using FT‐IR, NMR spectroscopies, and elemental analysis. Thin films of the three compounds were created using the sol‐gel spin coating process. The optical absorbance, transmittance, and reflectance were measured in the wavelength range (300–2500 nm). The absorption and dielectric properties were obtained and discussed in the context of complicated metals. The electronic transition energies (3.37, 3.51, and 3.08 eV) for the CHBM ligand, CHBM‐Cr, and CHBM‐Ru complexes were calculated and associated with their respective energy band gaps. These organic thin films show comparable nonlinear refractive index (n 2 ) and third‐order nonlinear susceptibility χ (3) to chalcogenide and oxide materials.
