Descriptive research evaluates the impact of sustainability initiatives on responsible tourism at RWMF 2024, suggesting improvements for future events.
This study investigated the effectiveness of three sustainability initiatives implemented during the Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) in 2024. This research is guided by three objectives: (a) to identify the sustainability practices implemented during the RWMF 2024; (b) to find out the effectiveness of the sustainability initiatives in greening RWMF 2024; and (c) to provide recommendations to the management to improve the festival in the future. A descriptive research design was used for the research, and quantitative methodology was applied. A survey method was used to collect the responses from the festival venue. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The data was collected both online and offline during the three days of the RWMF 2024. The respondents were the festival goers who attended the event during the music festival. There were a total of 1,323 respondents who had participated in this survey. The findings revealed that the overall effectiveness of the sustainability initiatives implemented scored a high value. Furthermore, the festival goers gave a high score for the sustainability initiatives and the responsible tourism initiatives at the Green Ruai. Notable sustainability initiatives, such as the installation of eco-charging stations and the Fo-green machines at the festival venue, received excellent ratings from the attendees. Overall, the sustainability and responsible tourism initiatives introduced by Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) in the festival venue have had a long-term positive impact not only on the greening of music festivals but also on the event management industry. This research on sustainability practices in music festivals offers practical implications for policymakers and event managers to strategically enhance festival management and sustainability initiatives, promoting responsible tourism practices when hosting an event. Future studies are recommended to explore the nature and extent of local communities' involvement in the sustainability and responsible tourism activities when organising an event.
