Assessment of helminth control methods finds that routine treatment may need re-evaluation, suggesting increased reliance on diagnostic testing for pets.
Anthelmintics remain a fundamental component of both the treatment of parasitic disease and preventative healthcare for pets. The focus of helminth control to reduce disease and zoonotic risk in the United Kingdom (UK) has traditionally been routine treatment rather than testing. While routine treatment remains an important tool, it should be used based on a risk assessment and as part of a range of measures used for control. Routine diagnostic testing also has a vital role to play in geographic surveillance, monitoring the efficacy of control plans and the efficacy of products being used. It may also be used as an alternative to routine intestinal roundworm treatment.
