Abstract The mounting cost of forest protection, the conflicting sentiments of local people as to the propriety of keeping out fires, and the realization that state funds should be expended only for the protection of those resources that have state-wide value, have led California's state forester to initiate a survey to determine what areas should be given protection and to what extent. Mr. Sanford, who is making the survey, tells here of the first steps and problems that have already engaged his attention.
