Observational analysis identifies fomes annosus as a major threat to red cedar, suggesting silvicultural practices to mitigate light competition.
Red cedar in the southeastern United States may be attacked by the polypore, Fomes annosus. This fungus kills trees regardless of age and causes a pocket-rot of butt logs. Cedars growing in competition for light with pines or hardwoods that overtop them are thereby rendered susceptible to attack. Silvicultural management practices that materially reduce or eliminate competition for light are indicated to operate in greatly reducing losses from this disease.
