Abstract Wood is consumed in larger quantities for fuel than for any other purpose except lumber. Because of the nonexacting requirements of this use, its potentialities for improved forest utilization and forest management are immense. The author stresses these points at the beginning and the end of his paper, the bulk of which is devoted to a discussion of the relative advantages and disadvantages of wood and the need for more research in its use for fuel.
