This research demonstrates blister-rust cankers develop mainly on 1-year-old wood in eastern white pine, suggesting age influences infection rates.
It is important for various reasons to know whether blister-rust cankers develop more frequently on current-season, year-old, or 2-year-old wood. The studies reported in this paper show that the majority of cankers develop on needle-bearing wood that is 1 year old at the time of exposure. This was true of potted plants and undisturbed natural reproduction of eastern white pine, and also of 7 other 5-needled pines.
