Examination identifies prolonged drought as a key factor contributing to hemlock decline in Wisconsin.
To determine the causes of the decadence of the eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.) on the Menominee Indian Reservation, in east-central Wisconsin, a detailed examination of the root systems of a number of decadent or dead trees was made during the summer of 1939. The conclusion is reached that the prolonged drought period of 1930-37 was the primary cause of the decadence and death of hemlock on the reservation.
