Case study reveals how female bodies are commodified in music, highlighting gender equality narratives.
This article investigates how the female body functions as a symbol of consumption and gender equality in music. We focus on the 2023 edition of the Rock The Mountain festival, which, despite featuring a 100% female lineup, had more than 90% male instrumentalists. The central question is: how are female bodies commodified within narratives of gender equality in the music industry? Using the concept of "commodity feminism" by Goldman, Heath, and Smith (1991), we analyze the consumption of feminist agendas through a neoliberal perspective. Methodologically, we conducted a case study with documentary and exploratory research, including journalistic articles, social media posts, and informal accounts from women who attended the event.
