Abstract

The study discusses the metal decorations of Asante King regalia, its production and cultural value. The study will apply a phenomenological approach of research and endeavour to know the experiences and meanings ascribed to these metallic objects by Asante people in their lives. This was done by the use of several data collection tools such as observing the regalia making process first hand, conducting in-depth interviews with the artisans themselves, royal custodians, and experts in the cultural field and conducting focus groups with members of the community at the Manhyia Palace. The observations helped in making the complex craftsmanship and symbolism incorporated in the metallic pieces. Historical stories, spiritual implications, and social purposes of the embellishments were revealed through interviews and the overall reflection on the current relevance and conservation was made possible through focus groups. Results of the study showed that the metallic ornaments are not only decorative but they are also powerful signs of power, identity, and continuity in the Asante culture. The significance of these regalia in supporting the legitimacy of the Asante King, and the communal heritage is highlighted in this phenomenological inquiry. The research leads to a more accurate understanding of the Asante material culture and provides suggestions on how these cultural values can be preserved under the influence of modernization.
