This review identifies four Podontia species in India, highlighting their ecological importance and economic roles.
Globally, the genus Podontia Dalman, 1824 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Galerucinae: Alticini) comprises 15 species, identifiable by a bifurcate prosternum, a saddle–shaped mesosternum, and strongly inwardly curved bifid tarsal claws. A recent review of Podontia specimens from the National Zoological Collection of the Coleoptera Section, Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata, led to the recognition of four species from India: Podontia rufocastanea Baly, 1865; P. congregata Baly, 1865; P. quatuordecimpunctata Linnaeus, 1767; and P. affinis (Gröndal, 1808). To facilitate accurate species differentiation, we have developed a revised key to Indian Podontia species, accompanied by distribution maps and photographs of both the habitus and aedeagus. In India, Podontia species hold ecological and economic importance, functioning as both pests and potential biological control agents. By synthesizing current knowledge and highlighting research gaps, this review enhances our understanding of Podontia in India, thereby facilitating future taxonomic and ecological investigations of this important insect group.
