Microscopic structure analysis reveals key differences in stem anatomy of Polygonum species, suggesting identification criteria for medicinal plants.
The paper presents the results of the study of microscopic structure of the stem of silver mountain (Polygonum argyrocoleon Steud. ex Junze) andNovoascanic mountain (Polygonum novoascanicum Klokov) (family Polygonaceae), widely growing in Northern and Central Kazakhstan. The following diagnostic features were determined: clear-shaped cells of stem epidermis; a cavity in the central part of the stem, alternation of sections of angular collenchyma and chlorenchyma along the perimeter. Silver Highlander is characterized by the presence of conducting bundles and druses of calcium oxalate, whereas Newascan Highlander has a non-bundle type of structure, no druses. The obtained data can be used for identification of medicinal plant raw materials.
