This review describes mixing processes in gravity currents, highlighting effects on pyroclastic and turbidity currents.
This chapter describes the process of entrainment and mixing in gravity currents and points to the effects of this on the dynamics of pyroclastic density currents and turbidity currents, in which the role of particle transport is key. It presents experiments and some simplified models that have been developed to provide insight into the dynamics of the mixing. The chapter draws a distinction between the case of a finite release and a continuous current in terms of the process of mixing and the impact of this on the structure of the flow.
