Key Points

  • A new species, anthrenus tigrinellus, is described based on unique genital structures.
  • Seven species of the subgenus anthrenus are documented from Afghanistan, showcasing biodiversity in the region.
  • Differentiation was conducted using genital structure, as color patterns may vary due to plasticity.
  • The study presents detailed images of the new species, including genital structures and overall morphology.

Abstract

A new species, Anthrenus (Anthrenus) tigrinellus Holloway (Coleoptera: Dermestidae: Megatominae) is described from Afghanistan and compared with A. flavipes (LeConte, 1854) and A. flavidulus Reitter, 1889, the most likely confounding species from the region. Differentiation is performed using genital structure since color pattern could be subject to plasticity, as noted in several Dermestidae. Images of habitus, ventrites, antenna, and male and female genital structures are presented. Seven species of subgenus Anthrenus Geoffroy are now recorded from Afghanistan.
