Assessment of compressive strength in concrete containing calcium hydroxide treated wood sawdust and agave fibres, suggesting potential for sustainable construction materials.
The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the addition of treated wood sawdust (WS) and agave fibres (AF) in ecological concrete mixtures. A methodology consisting in the immersion in a calcium hydroxide solution was implemented for the WS and the AF. The treated WS and AF were used to elaborate concrete mixtures considering different proportions. Afterwards the compressive strength (CS) of the concretes was evaluated at 7, 14 and 28 days. The results did not show significant differences in the slump of the concrete mixtures containing WS and AF, or combination of these. The CS of the concretes containing WS was reduced in comparison with the control concrete. However, the CS of the concretes with a combination of WS and AF were higher than the control concrete.
