Observational study assesses microcephaly incidence and etiology in term and late preterm newborns, indicating gaps in clinical guidelines.
INTRODUCTION Microcephaly is defined as an occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) >2 standard deviations below the mean for age and sex assigned at birth, or <3rd percentile; incidence estimates in published studies are ~0.5%.1 The etiology of microcephaly can include genetic syndromes, infections, teratogen exposure or injury to the brain or no etiology.1-3 There are currently no guidelines to direct physicians in the workup of newborn microcephaly.
