Mixed-methods analysis reveals how tourism influences expatriate adjustment and interaction opportunities.
The intersection of tourism and expatriation has received scant analysis but offers important synergies. This study explored the role of tourism in high-skilled expatriate adjustment, analysing how expatriates adjust and feel more attached to their new homes. This mixed-methods study revealed five arenas of expatriate adjustment: individual, destination, exposure opportunities, company, and host. These arenas, if present or implemented, could help expatriates acclimatise to their new homes. We find that tourism impacts several arenas and influences expatriate adjustment. We show that tourism provides opportunities for expatriates and host country nationals to interact and learn from each other, offering theoretical and practical insights into the impacts of tourism.
