Abstract This research article explores the potential for tourism development in Indonesia, particularly in Belitung, with a focus on legal frameworks to support sustainable tourism. The study highlights the importance of ecotourism as a strategy to preserve natural and cultural assets while promoting the local economy. Methodologically, this article combines doctrinal and non-doctrinal legal approaches, collecting data through interviews with local stakeholders and analyzing existing literature on sustainable practices and tourism attractions in the region. This approach enables a comprehensive evaluation of Belitung’s geophysical features. The findings indicate that Belitung holds significant potential for ecotourism development due to its rich natural resources and cultural heritage. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including the need for strategic planning and community engagement to ensure that tourism growth does not compromise environmental sustainability. Moreover, several legal issues must be addressed, such as the suboptimal regulation of protected zone zoning, weak enforcement of environmental laws, and inconsistencies between local and national tourism policies. This article offers actionable recommendations aimed at enhancing ecotourism practices while preserving Belitung’s natural landscape and geological heritage for future generations, including regulatory reform, strengthened inter-agency coordination, and improved legal literacy among local communities.
