Archaeological work revealed burnt clothing fragments in Moscow, suggesting insights into pre-Petrine attire.
In 2021 during archaeological work in Moscow on the territory of the former Goncharnaya Sloboda, the remains of an object that had been in a severe fire were discovered. The remains were a large, burnt, completely shapeless mass, falling apart into separate fragments, consisting of textiles, remains of wooden boards and fragments of metal strips. The study made it possible to determine that the burnt object was a wooden chest with metal fittings, which contained neatly folded items of clothing of a pre-Petrine appearance. A comprehensive study of textile remains, including material science, technological, art history analysis, made it possible to attribute them, analyze the cut and sewing, identify individual features, and, based on the research, perform full or partial graphic reconstructions of the original appearance of some things.
