Risk assessment reveals high-risk levels in a gas pipeline, suggesting pipe bridge construction for safety.
Pipes are commonly used to transport fluids in the form of gases and liquids. In terms of their use, Pertamina Gas uses pipelines to distribute high-pressure gas, which requires the pipes to remain in good and safe condition. The safest placement for gas pipelines is buried underground, where they are fully protected. However, a 24-inch Pipeline X was buried beneath what was originally a small drainage channel. Over time, due to climate changes, environmental factors, and soil erosion at the base of the channel, the channel expanded, exposing the upper part of the pipe. Eventually, the pipeline became fully exposed and suspended over a 14-meter span at an elevation of 3 meters. Without preventive maintenance, this could severely damage the gas pipeline and channel, leading to major security, environmental, and financial risks. A pipeline integrity assessment was conducted using a risk-based approach referring to ASME B31.8S, all data was maintained in the Asset Integrity Management System (AIMS) owned by Pertamina Gas. The risk assessment results indicated that the gas pipeline segment was at a high-risk level. To resolve the problem, surveys and field tests were conducted to assess environmental conditions and determine the causes. Based on these findings, a study and action plan were developed. The final solution involves constructing a pipe bridge beam and pillar structure to enclose the gas pipeline and support pipe, along with a retaining wall for channel stabilization. This permanent reinforced concrete structure will ensure long-term safety and successfully reduce the risk level to medium.
