Action research improves understanding of plant reproduction in primary school students, suggesting effective use of tissue culture techniques.
This action research was conducted to assist Year 3 students in improving their understanding towards plant reproduction topic. The technique and kit used in this study were the tissue culture technique and the Plant Tissue Culture (PTC) kit, which involved the use of biotechnology experiments to provide them with a better scientific experience and consequently enhance their understanding of the subject. The participants of this study consisted of 17 primary school students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Sungai Naman, Julau. These students had low achievement in science subjects and relatively low scientific experiences due to the lack of a fully equipped science laboratory in school. Data for this study were collected through pre- and post-tests and observations made during the intervention program. The data from the pre- and post-tests were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26, while the observation results were analysed based on changes in physical aspects, responses, facial expressions, student participation, and questioning skills among the students. The analysis revealed that all participants demonstrated a good understanding of the topic of plant reproduction. The pre- and post-tests showed a significant improvement in scores, proving the positive effectiveness of the technique and kit introduced. Observations also showed active student involvement in the activities, encouraging responses, and quality questioning among the students. Therefore, the study's findings indicate that the application of the tissue culture technique and the PTC kit can enhance students' scientific experience and understanding of the topic of plant reproduction.
