Case study uncovers dropout reasons among Chemistry Teaching students, highlighting socioeconomic factors and retention strategies.
The high dropout rate in higher education courses is widely recognized as a significant challenge in the Brazilian educational context, prompting extensive academic analysis and debate. Researchers highlight that socioeconomic factors play a crucial role in increasing dropout rates among students. Understanding these factors is essential for formulating effective strategies to promote retention and completion of university courses. Investigating and understanding the specific causes of dropout in Chemistry Teaching degree programs is vital for developing targeted interventions, guiding adjustments in student welcoming processes, curriculum structure, and the support offered to students, thus improving the educational experience and increasing course completion rates. The objective of this article was to identify the main factors that determine dropout in the Chemistry Teaching degree program at the Federal University of Roraima, considering the cohorts of students who dropped out between 2016 and 2023. A case study with a qualitative and quantitative investigation was conducted, using online questionnaires to identify the determining causes of dropout. The sample included 33 dropouts, of whom 17 responded to the questionnaire. The responses allowed the identification of the main reasons cited as causes of dropout, such as difficulties adapting to university life and socioeconomic aspects, closely related to the challenges of balancing work and study.
