This study analyses Gianni Vernuccio’s cinematic adaptation of Dino Buzzati’s Un amore (A love affair), focusing on the representation of the female characters (especially Laide) and the evolution of their agency from page to screen. Drawing on Laura Mulvey’s concept of the “male gaze” (1975), the analysis explores how the narrative, which is filtered through a male perspective in the book, is transformed in the film medium. Specifically, it investigates the ways in which the film adaptation grants the female characters greater autonomy and initiative, challenging the traditional objectification often associated with the male gaze. By comparing and contrasting the portrayals of the female characters (especially Laide) in the literary and cinematic versions, this research aims to shed light on the transformative power of Vernuccio’s film in reinterpreting gender dynamics.
