This architecture demonstrates 99.9% availability in electronic toll collection, utilizing intelligent load balancing and machine learning.
This paper presents an autonomous container-based microservices architecture specifically designed for scalable electronic toll collection platform deployment across diverse transportation infrastructures. The proposed Autonomous Toll Platform System (ATPS) employs intelligent container orchestration and self-managing microservices to handle varying traffic loads, seasonal fluctuations, and special event scenarios without manual intervention. Our methodology decomposes toll collection functionality into specialized microservices including vehicle detection, classification, payment processing, account management, and fraud detection, each deployed in containers that can scale independently based on demand. The system incorporates machine learning-based auto-scaling algorithms that predict traffic patterns and proactively adjust computing resources before peak periods occur. We introduce a novel service mesh architecture with intelligent load balancing that optimizes performance across geographically distributed toll collection points. The autonomous component continuously monitors system health, automatically deploys updates, handles failovers, and optimizes resource allocation without service disruption. Our implementation includes advanced container security measures, encrypted inter-service communication, and comprehensive logging for audit and compliance requirements. The platform supports hybrid cloud deployment enabling toll operators to leverage both on-premises and cloud resources based on cost and performance requirements. Experimental validation using real-world toll collection workloads demonstrates 99.9% availability with automatic handling of traffic spikes up to 10x normal capacity while maintaining sub-second response times.
