This article explores how standard and non-standard gestures for agreement and disagreement function in Bulgarian culture, highlighting communication differences.
This article attempts to describe and analyze the Bulgarian microsystem of gestures for agreement and disagreement performed with the head. It is based on personal observations of real situations, namely evidence from gestures depicted in scenes from Bulgarian films. The microsystem includes parallel functioning gestures that are both non-standard, i.e. inherent in Bulgarian communication and not inherent in the communication of the vast majority of other nations, as well as standard, characteristic of both the communication of other nations and Bulgarians. The article investigates the differences in their implementation, the conditions for distinguishing them in the process of communication and their systemic nature.
