Experimental analysis shows that longer stratification improves germination in loblolly pine seeds, indicating temperature plays a significant role.
Longer periods of stratification were required to obtain prompt and complete germination of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seed under simulated field conditions (60°F, 11-hour photoperiod) than under standard laboratory conditions. Seeds stratified outdoors over-winter and seeds stratified in a refrigerator at 34°F germinated equally well under standard laboratory conditions.
