Abstract A review of trends in forest inventory practices in regard to their adequacy for answering silvicultural questions suggests that a dichotomy exists between inventory specialists and silvicultural interests. Further, neither group seems aware of the dependency of management on their cooperation. Recent technological developments in sampling methodology and computer-based modeling capabilities offer means for incorporating silvicultural considerations in inventory designs.
